　What are you doing by the door?

I'm waiting for my brother.
I'm going to go home with him.

　He isn't in our classroom.
　You can enter the classroom. Come in.

　Who is he?

　Sukuharu is Sukuo's brother.

　Nice to meet you. I'm Manami.
　Sukuo may be late. He is in the gymnasium.

Nice to meet you. I'm Sukuharu.
I have cookies. You may eat it.

　We may not eat anything here.
　He may not come here at once.

May I lay my bag on this desk?
My bag is very heavy.

　Of course.

I would like to go home early.
I'm tired and hungry.

　You should wait for him.
　And you shouldn't eat the cookies.

　I can go to the gymnasium.
　Do you go with me?

Yes, I do.

　You had better go to the cafeteria on the way.

■文法
(1)may
mayはcanやwillと同じく助動詞で、may＋動詞の原形で使われる。
意味は「〜かもしれない」、「〜してもよい」と２通りあり、文の前後からその意味を判断する。
「〜してもよい」はcanと同じだが、mayの方が少し丁寧な表現になる。

It may be rain tomorrow.   (明日は雨が降るかもしれない。)
You may go home.   (あなたは家に帰ってもいいですよ。)

(2)may not
may notの意味も、「〜してはいけない」と「〜でないかもしれない」の２つの使われ方をする。

You may not swim in this river.   (この川で泳いではいけない。)
He may not .have the book.   (彼はその本を持っていないかもしれない。)

(3)May I 〜？
 「〜してもいいですか」と表現するときは、May I(we) 〜？を使う。

　 May I come in? (入ってもいいですか。)
    Sure.
Of course.
Yes, please.

I'm sorry, you can't.
 (いいですよ。)
(もちろん。)
(はい、どうぞ。)

(すみませんが、ダメです。)

※会話でよく使われる表現として、
　May(Can) I help you?　(いらっしゃいませ。)がある。

(4)would like to
「〜したい」と表現をするとき、would like to＋動詞の原形を使う。
主語がIの場合、I wouldはI'dと短縮形にできる。

肯定文 I would like to go there.   (私はそこに行きたい。)
  (I'd)       
否定文 I wouldn't  like to go there.   (私はそこに行きたくない。)
疑問文 Would you like to go there.?   (あなたはそこに行きたいですか。)

※「〜したい」の他に、「〜しませんか」という意味もある。
　Would you like to come with me?　(私と一緒に来ませんか。)

(5)should
「〜すべきである」と表現するときは、助動詞のshouldを使う。
shouldの後には必ず動詞の原形がくる。

肯定文 You shuld do your homwork.   (あなたは宿題をすべきです。)
否定文 You shuldn't  say such a thing.   (あなたはそんなことを言うべきではない。)

(6)had better
「〜したほうがいい」と表現するときは、had betterを使う。hadに過去の意味はない。
had betterの後には必ず動詞の原形がくる。
ただし、had betterは相手に押し付ける意味合いがあり、小さい子供や目下の相手に
使う以外は使わない方がいい。

　You had better go to bed.　(あなたは寝た方がいい。)
